Firefighters save dog from canal in town centre

FIREFIGHTERS rescued a dog from the canal in Rotherham town centre in the early hours of this morning.

Three fire crews from Rotherham, Dearne and Aston stations were called out to the dog in a canal at Main Street at 5.50am.  

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Firefighters were able to reach the dog with a pole and line and safely rescued it.

"Firefighters left the scene at 6.30am.”

The dog was left with the police, they added, until the RSPCA were expected to arrive.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said this morning they had not been able to locate an owner so far, but the dog had been taken to the vets to be checked over.
