Domestic abuse increase expected during Euro championships

SOUTH Yorkshire Police says it is expecting an increase in disorder and domestic abuse during this summer’s European football championships.

The force said that England’s involvement in major tournaments has led to a rise in alcohol-related incidents and crime in the past.

It has now launched a campaign to promote messages of responsible drinking and to encourage people to not drink excessively.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Jason Harwin, who is overseeing the campaign, said: “For many, the event provides regular entertainment and an opportunity to get behind our England players.

“However, for the force there is a more serious side to the competition. We are expecting to see a rise in alcohol-related incidents, disorder and domestic abuse, as well as an increased demand on public transport services.

“This could mean a rise in the number of incidents on or around the transport network but also a rise in the number of people driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

“We don’t want to stop anybody’s fun and want everybody to enjoy the games, but, we’re hoping the campaign will remind people of the consequences of drinking, and the lasting impact their actions could have.”

The force will also be tweeting all calls made to its 101 non-emergency number from 4pm until midnight on Saturday, June 11 — when England play Russia in their opening game.

Roy Hodgson’s men will also take on Wales on Thursday, June 16 and Slovakia on Monday, June 20 in their group games.
