Detectives investigating arson attack appeal for witnesses

A FIRE which caused extensive damage to a disused council building is being treated as suspicious by police.

Officers are now urging witnesses to come forward who may know how the fire at the single-storey building on Queen Street, Swinton, started on Sunday.

The incident occurred around 7pm and at the height of the blaze six fire engines were at the scene.

The surrounding area was cordoned off while the fire was dealt with and no one was injured in the incident.

Police officers believe the fire started at the front of building and are treating it as suspicious.

Temporary detective inspector Steve Brookes said: “The fire caused extensive damage and as a result, the building has been shut for health and safety reasons.

“Our officers are continuing to pursue various lines of enquiry in a bid to identify those responsible for this incident.

“I would encourage anyone with information, or who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident, to get in touch.”
