Dearne Valley residents warned of spike in car crime

POLICE are stepping up their fight against car crime after a rise in the number of break-ins.

Officers across Doncaster have been out and about talking to members of the public about the dangers of leaving property in their car including sat navs, bags and laptops.

Supt Eddie Murphy said: “People need to realise that leaving items on display in cars will invite criminals to break in.

“Unfortunately, we live in a society whereby we can’t leave things unattended and/or in view, and expect it will still be there when we return.

“We don't want people to learn the hard way or become a victim of crime for something that could have been prevented. Criminals nowadays will break into a car even if they see a plastic bag.

“We know that being a victim of car crime can be a hassle therefore we are asking people to spend an additional few seconds removing items from the car before leaving it unattended.”

Police officers have asked anyone with information about car crime to contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
