Busy weekend for firefighters

A CAR crash, an electricity substation fire and a crumbling chimney gave firefighters a busy start to the new year.

A Dearne station crew tackled a crumbling chimney on Lowfield Road, Bolton-on-Dearne on Saturday evening.

One crew stayed on the scene until 9pm as a precaution, while Rotherham Borough Council engineers repaired the structure.

Three crews attended an electrical fire at a substation in Waleswood early on Sunday.

Firefighters from Aston, Parkway and Birley arrived at around 1am — one crew remained on the scene as a precaution until 5am.

The fire is thought to have been sparked by damaged electrical cables.

Rotherham and Dearne stations attended a traffic crash in West Melton at around 7.50am on Sunday.

A car had veered off at Packman Road and into a stream. The male driver was  unharmed — fire crews departed at around 8.30am.

One crew from Rotherham station put out a burning motorbike in Mexborough at noon on Sunday.

They attended to the vehicle for about 40 minutes. The fire is thought to have been started deliberately.

One Dearne crew attended Reed Walk in Wath last night, where a car was ablaze.

Staff left the scene around 45 minutes later — the fire is thought to have been started deliberately.

The same station visited Wentworth Road in Rawmarsh at 10.50pm, where another car was on fire.

One crew left the area at 11.55pm after putting out the blaze, which is also thought to have been started deliberately.

Staff from Rotherham station visited Danum Drive at Clifton early this morning, where a third car was alight.

Arriving at around 1am, staff left around an hour later. The fire is thought to have been deliberate.
