81-year-old child rapist to remain in jail for life

AN 81-year-old man is expected to remain in jail for the rest of his life after admitting nine counts of non-recent rape of a child.

Edward Milne, of Austen Avenue in Balby, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Monday, when he was sentenced to 14 years behind bars.

Milne admitted offences which spanned an eight-year-period, at a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court in October.

Det Con Rebecca Breakwell, leading the investigation, said: “Milne began to carry out this abuse when the victim was only nine years old and he continued this horrific behaviour over a period of eight years.

“His victim was vulnerable and Milne took advantage of her trust in him.

“I cannot underestimate the pain the victim has been forced to live with as a result of this abuse.

“Her courage to come forward to police cannot be underestimated and Milne would not be spending life in prison was it not for her bravery.”

Milne was arrested after the victim contacted the police in September last year and a full investigation was launched.
