Council commissioners say Flanderwell children’s centre failure not their fault

THE COMMISSIONERS brought in last year to turn RMBC around this week distanced themselves from a failed children’s centre that closed after just 11 months.

Last week, the Advertiser revealed the newly-built teaching unit at Flanderwell Primary School for autistic children, which cost RMBC £578,000 and opened in October 2014, was being permanently scrapped amid safety fears.

The borough council had failed to consult its own autism or child psychology specialists in the design and now admitted it was unsuitable for autistic children.

UKIP councillor Greg Reynolds said he had only found out about the situation from the Advertiser’s report and asked if the commissioners had “any hand” in the unit.

Managing director Stella Manzie said: “Commissioners were not involved in setting it up, it was something further in the past.”
