Cooplands bakery make 303 redundant and close 39 stores

STAFF at Rotherham branches of long-standing bakery firm Cooplands are facing an uncertain future after the business went into administration last week (Feb 5).

A total of 303 jobs have been lost after the Doncaster-based firm went into administration with 39 stores closing.

The company’s head office and bakery in Doncaster has been part of the cull.

The retailer, based in Doncaster, had 80 stores, 26 mobile sandwich vans and 562 employees.

Rotherham shops at All Saints Square and Herringthorpe Valley Road have closed along with those on High Street in Mexborough, High Street in Maltby, Main Avenue in Edlington and Church Street in Conisbrough.

But the stores at Bawtry Road in Wickersley, Market Place in Tickhill, Frederick Street and Chaucer Road in Rotherham, Laughton Road in Dinnington, Brinsworth Lane in Brinsworth and Scot Lane in Bawtry have been sold.

Adrian Berry and Daniel Butters, partners of Deloitte, have been appointed as joint administrators of Cooplands.

Mr Berry said: “Cooplands has seen a recent deterioration in trading performance across its retail business, which combined with a significant fixed manufacturing cost, has resulted in unsustainable losses.

“Regrettably we have had to close 39 retail stores together with the bakery and head office in Doncaster.

“However, there is some positive news with the sale of 41 retail stores and the entire mobile sandwich van business, which will preserve 259 jobs.”
