Conisbrough fan pens World Cup song for England - AUDIO

A FOOTBALL fan is hoping to score a hit with his anthem England and Me after entering a competition to be the official World Cup song.

Footie-mad Steve Wright (41), of Conisbrough, who goes by the nickname Milkie, penned the catchy tune, England and Me, after the back beat came to him in a dream.

And after years of feeling disappointed by England’s football chants, delivery driver Milkie decided to get himself into the studio and try and strike the right chord himself.

Now, the dad-of-one is in the running to be Five Live’s official England World Cup anthem.

He said: “The song was born out of frustration that we hadn’t really had a great England song since Vindaloo and Three Lions.

“I think the song is really catchy and I hope every one likes it.

“I’m flying the flag for Rotherham and the feedback so far has been really positive.”

Milkie was knocked out in the quarter final stages of the TalkSport England song competition but is now hoping to impress a panel of judges in the Five Live hunt for an England anthem.

His song England and Me is now being played on local radio stations and Milkie hopes it will become a regular hit at pubs and bars in the area throughout the World Cup.

“I’ve got 300 fans on Facebook which is a good start and I hope to reach around 1,000 downloads if possible,” he said.

“Every time someone downloads the song, 20 pence will be donated to Help Our Heroes.

“It would just be a dream to be in a pub watching a game and hearing people sing along to my song.

“My family and friends are all supporting me and they are loving it.”

Milkie, who laid down the track at Axis studios in Doncaster, is no stranger to the music scene as he was part of a 90s Britpop band called Honky who released an album called The Ego has Landed.

It was their copyright which prevented Robbie Williams from releasing an album under the same name in the UK.

Ironically, the label that Honky released that album under was owned by Trevor Horn, the same man who has collaborated with Robbie Williams on the current Three Lions remix.

He added: “A lot of people are disappointed with the new Three Lions release. They’ve tried to give it a classical twist which takes away from why people liked it in the first place.

“Ultimately this is all about fun and giving people a catchy tune to sing along to.

“I’m a big football fan and am really excited about the World Cup now, I can’t wait for it to start.”
