Clubber hurt after glass thrown in Rotherham club

INJURIES caused to a 26-year-old man have prompted renewed calls for revellers to drink out of plastic containers in all town centre pubs and clubs.

A 22-year-old from Treeton was arrested by police after a glass bottle was thrown in the Liquid and Envy nightclub, striking the man on his head shortly after midnight on Saturday morning.

Officers later confirmed that the injured man had escaped with minor grazing and bruises, but the incident has prompted town centre pub safety campaigners Pubwatch to question why their policy to use plastic glasses and bottles had not been in place at the club.

The group’s chairman and manager of Pop Nightclub on Corporation Street, Lee Mills, said: “As chairman of Pubwatch, I am fighting for as many venues to go down the polycarbonate route as possible.

“Our view is not only that incidents such as this will reduce if clubs go down that route but it will reduce the costs of the ambulance service and the police.”

A police spokesman confirmed that officers had made an arrest following Saturday morning’s disturbance at the nightclub off Main Street, and the alleged culprit had been released on bail.

She added: “It seems that the nightclub had adopted Pubwatch’s policy to use polycarbonate receptacles but later opted to revert back to glass.

“In this instance it is alleged that a glass bottle was thrown and struck another man in the club but, luckily, nobody sustained serious injuries.”

General manager of Liquid and Envy, Richard Taylor, was unavailable for comment.
