Chairs fit for a Queen made in Rotherham

APPRENTICES in Rotherham helped create chairs fit for a queen ahead of yesterday’s big royal visit.

Youngsters from the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre worked with cutlery firm Chimo to make parts for the seats.

They were commissioned by Sheffield Cathedral for the Queen and other guests ahead of the Maundy money ceremony.

Alison Bettac, training director at the AMRC Training Centre said: “We were delighted to help Chimo, a successful company which has kept alive some of Sheffield’s most historic and prestigious cutlery brand names.

“In years to come, those people from the training centre who were involved will be able to point to the chairs and say they played a part in a little bit of Sheffield history.”

Chimo’s Chris Hudson said: “We also thought it would be great to involve apprentices from the AMRC Training Centre.”

The centuries-old Easter tradition of Maundy money involves the reigning monarch presenting specially minted coins to pensioners.

Following the Royal Maundy Service, the seats will be in regular use in services at the Cathedral.
