POLICE were called out to deal with 52 incidents at a Rotherham pub before the trouble climaxed in a horrific attack in which a man was stabbed in the face.

POLICE were called out to deal with 52 incidents at a  Rotherham pub before the trouble climaxed in a horrific attack in which a man was stabbed in the face.

A Rotherham Borough Council licensing hearing was told that more than half of the incidents were breaches of licensing law.

But over the course of a year there were also 20 fights and assaults, three calls for rowdy behaviour and two for drug offences.

The board heard that neighbouring businesses even started a petition against the Effingham Arms, in Effingham Street, Rotherham.

But the pub was shut down after a customer was knifed in the face, allegedly over a £30 debt.

The hearing was also told that customers and former landlord ndrew Llewellyn had refused to co-operate with the police and the pub owners Enterprise Inns and now severed links with the former tenants Magna Inns.

The council’s licensing board decided to keep the pub closed until December after hearing that Enterprise Inns intended to spend up to £60,000 refurbishing and improving the pub.
