Canal death schoolboy laid to rest

A SCHOOLBOY who died in a canal one week into his summer holidays has been laid to rest.

The funeral of Subhaan Ali (11) of Eldon Road, Eastwood took place at nearby Ridge Road Mosque on Monday evening.

At the opening of an inquest into his death yesterday, Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard he had been playing near the Earl of Fitzwilliam’s Canal, behind Parkgate Retail World, last Thursday when he got into difficulty in the water.

His friends raised the alarm — firefighters and police officers searched for him for four hours, before recovering his body from the canal.

Investigating officer Temporary Det Insp Graham Stead said that there appeared to be “no suspicious circumstances” around the Sitwell Juniors pupil’s death.
