Bus interchange evacuated after suicide threat

A BUSY bus interchange was evacuated after a man threatened to jump from a multi-storey car park.

The Rotherham interchange on Frederick Street was evacuated on Wednesday (January 8) just after 10pm when a man in a distressed state attempted to take his own life.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) said the man arrived at the bus station at 9.55pm and went up to the fourth floor of the public car park in a distressed state.

South Yorkshire Police officers were on site by 10.07pm and the station was cleared of buses and passengers and closed at 10.15pm.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) said buses were asked to pull into nearby locations instead of the interchange.

She added: “An ambulance arrived as a precaution at 10.23pm and the male was arrested at 10.30pm.

“The all clear was given and normal service resumed at 10.40pm.

“No complaints were received and passengers were quite understanding.”
