Brass band festivals brings thousands to Whiston

MORE than one kind of cornet was being put to good use at the weekend...

For as eight brass bands battled it out at Whiston’s annual festival of fine music, the balmy weather proved ideal for scoffing ice cream.

The event, dubbed Brasstonbury by organisers, was opened by the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Maggi Clark, and was supposed to see bands taking it in turn to march through the village to a purpose-built outdoor stage at the village green to perform a 25-minute programme of entertainment.

But the marching had to be abandoned after the first two bands due to the size of the 4,000 crowd.

Overall winners the Strata Brass Band were awarded Best overall band, most entertaining band and best 1st section band.

A host of attractions were on offer, including children’s rides, a fun fair, craft and village style fete stalls, a hog roasts BBQ and outdoor bars.

Proceedings were brought to a close by a Brass for All concert in the evening featuring Hatfield Brass.

Next year’s event will be held on July 2.
