Blast heroine Aimee honoured: VIDEO

A young heroine has been honoured with the fire service's highest accolade for her actions after a horrific explosion in Edlington.

Aimee Dempsey (12), put her injuries to one side to help six of her friends who were severely injured following the incident at Duke Crescent, Edlington, earlier this year.

The children had been burning garden waste when one of the group poured highly flammable nitrous methane onto the brazier, sparking a large explosion which burnt the faces and heads of the children, the youngest of who was five years old.

Aimee was caught in the blast and received burns to her face and arms, but rushed to the nearest of the injured children who was still on fire and told him to roll on the ground to extinguish the flames.

She also pushed away a burning bin that was on top of another of the children and shouted safety intrustctions to the rest of the group.

Now her actions have been recognised with a Chief Fire Officer's Commendation—the highest fire service award a member of the public can win for displaying life saving bravery in South Yorkshire.

Aimee was presented with her certificate at a formal ceremony in front of fire crews, family and friends at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue's Edlington fire station.
