Be prepared for icy roads, warn police

THE winter cold snap has prompted police to encourage extra caution among Rotherham’s motorists.

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is this week recommending that drivers pay increased attention to winter driving conditions and allow themselves more time to complete journeys as forecasters warn temperatures are set to plummet.

Motorists are even being urged to carry emergency kit such as waterproof jackets, gloves, boots and a shovel, regardless of how long or short their journey may be.

Supt Eddie Murphy, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “Whilst local councils may be out gritting the roads, drivers and riders still need to be considerate of unexpected ice or snow and should be aware that spray from other vehicles will make it much harder to see what is happening on the road ahead.

“Bad weather is a real danger to all road users and I would recommend that you are aware of traffic conditions by checking local forecasts.

“If the weather does turn for the worst you should consider if your journey is essential or not.”

Adding an additional warning following an increased number of car thefts due to the colder weather in recent weeks, Supt Murphy added: “At this time of year, in addition to increased risks on the road there is also an increase in cars being stolen as drivers leave their car unattended with the engine running as ice on the windscreen clears.

“If you do this you not only run the risk of your vehicle being stolen but leaving your keys in the ignition could also invalidate your insurance.”
