Arsonists target skips and candles cause bedroom fire

ARSONISTS set fire to skips in two separate incidents around the borough and candles caused a fire at a bungalow.

The first deliberate skip fire was on Friday at 8.30pm at Fairfield Park, Manvers and a crew from Dearne station was at the scene for half-an-hour.

The following morning at Middle Lane, Herringthorpe a crew from Rotherham station attended another skip fire at 9am.

The blaze was near to Herringthorpe Stadium car park and was brought under control within half-an-hour.

Firefighters also dealt with two accidental incidents at residential properties.

There was a chimney fire at Ruskin Close, West Melton at 2.20pm on Saturday afternoon.

Two engines from Dearne station went to it and were there for about an hour and 20 minutes.

The fire was in the grate area and structural engineers were called as the chimney was unstable.

Candles also caused a fire in a bedroom of a bungalow at Caine Gardens, Kimberworth, at 10pm on Saturday night.

Two crews from Rotherham and Elm Lane attended and a lady in her 50s was treated for smoke inhalation.

Crews left the scene at 11.20pm.
