Anger over Olivia's plastic-coated hot-dog

A MOTHER has blasted a food company after her four-year-old daughter almost bit into a chunk of hot dog covered in hard plastic.

Sinead Greenhough (31) said that her daughter, Olivia Storm, could have choked if she hadn't seen the unwanted ingredient in time.

Sinead, who had bought the jar of Ye Olde Oak hot dogs from her local corner shop, said: “I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

“It was like a tough piece of plastic on one side of the hot dog.

“I decided to buy them as a treat for Olivia because she enjoys them.

“As I was preparing them, I didn't notice anything wrong.

“It was only when Olivia was about to put it in her mouth that I rushed to stop her.

“It wasn't like cling film, it was a proper tough piece of plastic.”

Sinead, of Allott Close, Ravenfield, contacted the manufacturer, which confirmed that it did not normally wrap the hot dogs in plastic before putting them into jars.

A spokesman from Ye Olde Oak said: “There was also no need for Mrs Greenhough to keep the hot dog, just the foreign material.

“We assume that this plastic must be a piece of the plastic casing used to produce these sausages.

“We have procedures in place to avoid this kind of issue.

“However, it would appear that in this case the procedures were not correctly followed.”

The company has agreed to pay compensation to Sinead, who said she had had to wait three weeks after complaining to hear back from the company.

She added: “I was informed I would have feedback on the complaint  more or less straight away and I didn't.

“I was told to keep the hot dog, too, but it soon started to shrivel up—not surprisingly when it takes so long for them to contact me.

“I have let the local shop where I bought them from know, too, and they were absolutely mortified.”
