CLLR Keith Stringer has never forgotten the help given by the National Autistic Society after his 13-year-old grandson, Joe, was found to have autism.

And today  the vice chairman of Maltby Town Council will hand over a cheque for £2,000 to the society–double the amount he set out to raise.

And today  the vice chairman of Maltby Town Council will hand over a cheque for £2,000 to the society–double the amount he set out to raise.

He said: "When we first found out Joe had autism we didn't really know where to turn to for help and the NAS offered invaluable advice and support around his education.

“Like many children with autism he was bullied at school and the charity offered us ways of dealing with this.

“That is why I chose to support the NAS to raise this money on their behalf. I know that all of the money will go to help individuals with autism like my grandson and I am very happy that we raised such a considerable amount."

Fundraising manager Kate Baxter from the National Autistic Society, the UK's leading charity for people affected by autism, will be going along to an event organised by Cllr Stringer tonight (11) at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall to receive the cheque.

The evening will  include a performance by local band Revival, as well as a raffle.

Cllr Stringer raised the cash by organising various fundraising events including a charity pub crawl. His original target was £1,000.

Ms Baxter said: “We are very grateful for the very generous donation from Cllr Stringer and for all the hard work that went into collecting it.”
