90mph gales and torrential rain bring danger for commuters

MOTORISTS battled windy and wet weather to get to work this morning after a night in which wind speeds in South Yorkshire passed the 90mph mark.

Police urged commuters to take extra care on the roads as more high winds and rain were forecast for this morning.

Electricity company workers were called in at 3am after reports of telegraph poles leaning across Brampton Road in Thurcroft.

The road was closed at its junctions with Toad Lane and Katherine Road while engineers worked to make the scene safe amid fears the poles or cables could fall into the road.

In other incidents, a car was left damaged in Sandymount Road, Wath, after a tree fell on it, while Hooton Lane at Ravenfield was closed for an hour after it was partly blocked by fallen tree branches.

A flood warning was put in place on the River Dearne and its tributaries from Denby Dale to Mexborough last night but withdrawn at 6am today as officials said the water level appeared to have peaked.

In Rotherham, advertising hoardings were battered by the winds. Advertiser reader Chris Savage sent us this picture of a large wooden hoarding which was left flattened this morning.

It was taken this morning on Sheffield Road, Templeborough, and Chris added: “There is lots of damage down there, as sheets from huge advert boards have been ripped off and scattered across the road.”

The Met Office forecast more rain for today with a day of sunny spells and blustery showers expected for much of England.

Forecasters said it would also be very windy for much of the day, but winds would gradually ease towards evening.
