Residents urged to attend Mexborough regeneration meeting

PLANS to relocate an outdoor market and create a new public square will be discussed at a meeting and residents are urged to go along and have their say.

The proposals are part of on-going discussions about how to regenerate Mexborough town centre and boost trade.

The meeting, on November 29, comes in the same week that the town’s Orchard Street Co-op store will close its doors with the loss of 35 jobs.

Cllr David Holland is leading the project and has asked Doncaster Council officers to create a blue-print for residents to look at — which includes the introduction of pop-up market stalls.

He said: “York Square’s original purpose was to be a public square. If we move the market out, it will create quite a big space which could accommodate a variety of things.

“Hopefully it would open the shops up around it and create an opportunity to have arts performances there.”

He added: “The pop-up stalls are put up in the morning and taken down at night by market staff, not the traders themselves.

“They are very sturdy and a lot more flexible and attractive. They could be located both in parts of the square and on the High Street.

Funding has already been secured to carry out the work

The meeting will take place at 7pm at Mexborough Resource Centre.
