Oh to be beside the sea in ... Rotherham

THE spirit of the seaside will still feature in Rotherham this summer thanks to a three-day event at Clifton Park next month.

The seaside special event aims to channel the spirit of Rotherham-by-the-Sea — axed by councillors last month — and will see deckchairs put up in the park for adults to lounge in while their kids enjoy a Punch and Judy Show.

A programme of weekly summer events including a spacehopper grand national and circus skills workshops have also been announced to replace the fortnight-long Rotherham-by-the-Sea, which has been scrapped after 12 years.

Six themed events will take place during the school summer holidays.

The new programme will kick off with a sporting event on July 23, set to include an inflatable football pitch and children’s go-karts.

Week two’s event on July 30 will focus on circus skills and stunts with plenty of arts, crafts and activities.

A birds of prey display and nature safari will be among animal-themed activities on August 6, which will also include a space hopper grand national and bungee run for the adrenaline junkies.

The penultimate event is a Party in the Square on August 22, with a disco, games and competitions, plus children’s entertainers.

The Clifton by the Sea event from August 25 to 27 in Clifton Park will round off the programme.

Meanwhile, the organisers of this year’s Rotherham Show are looking to wow the public after announcing a host of new attractions for the 36th annual event.

Held in Clifton Park on September 12 and 13, the show will host the first Rother FM Music Festival.
