Massive police presence as EDL and anti-fascists demonstrate

AN EXTRA 800 officers were drafted in by South Yorkshire Police as two major demonstrations came to Rotherham on Saturday.

Around 300 English Defence League supporters marched through town while hundreds more joined a counter event by Unite Against Fascism.

There were three arrests and police said they were pleased that the afternoon had passed without any major trouble in the streets.

Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey said: “I attended the UAF event to show the EDL racists from elsewhere that they are not welcome in our town.”

Rotherham Borough Council’s deputy leader Cllr Jahangir Akhtar added: “I am here to show support for the proud history of multiculturalism that we have here.”
