Man injured in 'unprovoked attack'

POLICE have issued an appeal for witnesses following an early hours assault which left a 32-year-old man requiring hospital treatment.

Officers said that a 32-year-old man was walking in New Street, Mexborough, at about 2.30am last Wednesday (22) when he was approached by his two attackers.

A police spokeswoman said: “He was assaulted by the suspects, who were both wearing dark clothing, and sustained a small puncture wound to his arm.

“Nothing was stolen in the incident and victim was treated at hospital for his injuries.”

The spokeswoman added that investigating officers believed the incident to be “an unprovoked attack.”

Detectives have been conducting enquiries in the area, viewing CCTV footage and speaking to residents.

They are now keen to hear from anyone with information about the incident.

Anyone who saw two men acting suspiciously in the New Street or James Street areas of Mexborough in the early hours of last Wednesday (22) should contact police by dialling 101, quoting incident number 60 of January 22.
